Tatsuya Nakatani is one of the most visually captivating, unusual and aesthetically wonderful, touring percussionists. He comes through Portland every year and packs every house.
around the world. Nakatani's approach to music is visceral, non-linear and intuitively primitive, expressing an unusually strong spirit while avoiding any categorization. He creates sound via both traditional and extended percussion techniques, utilizing drums, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects and bells, as well as various sticks, kitchen tools and homemade bows, all of which manifest in an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world.
Matt Carlson is a composer and musician who is an active participant in the underground and experimental music scene of Portland, Oregon. His numerous collaborations include modal electro-acoustic improvisation with Golden Retriever, orchestral arrangements and synthesizers with pop group Parenthetical Girls, sound installations, video soundtracks and performance art with Oregon Painting Society, long form freely improvised dance music with CexFucx, and reductionist electronic drones with Bonus. Carlson's debut solo LP, Particle Language, came out on Draft Records in 2011.
Doug Theriault is a longtime northwest improviser, composer and instrument builder.
